Head of Critical Facilities Maintenance

About the role:
Gyron is a rapidly growing part of NTT, the world’s largest telecommunications service provider, and provides highly resilient and energy efficient datacentre services, supporting business critical IT applications for customers such as Adobe, Salesforce, Sky, Sony, Spotify and IBM, from five state-of-the-art data centre facilities in the South East of England.

You will create and lead a small team responsible for developing and enforcing Gyron’s standards, quality control, financial planning and processes relating to CFM. You will be the functional lead for the CFM department in a matrix management structure, working closely with local Datacentre Managers and their teams at each of the five data centres within the current Gyron portfolio. You will have CFM responsibility for 50MW of data centre infrastructure across 5 sites which are managed on a day-to-day basis by site-based technical teams. 

Specifically, you will:

  • Provide mentoring, leadership and direction to the staff within your team, fostering a culture of passion and commitment for reliability and customer service. You will enable your team members to achieve their objectives, and facilitate collaboration with other departments across the business. 
  • Develop and implement internal and external training programmes for CFM staff, assist with performance management and coaching.
  • Identify and manage required change in the business from a CFM perspective: planned, unplanned and as part of wider projects. Work with all relevant staff and departments to accurately forecast resources required, and understand and communicate any potential impact to service or project delivery timescales. 
  • Define best practice in Critical Facilities Maintenance. Ensure correct processes are in place and all technical documentation is complete and up to date, including critical spares lists, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), etc. with a focus on accuracy, clarity and continual improvement. 
  • Ensure all facilities and activities meet the necessary statutory and regulatory requirements. Actively mitigate the risk of human error in all activities. 
  • Produce documentation detailing the requirements and specifications of maintenance agreements and define related SLAs and KPIs 
  • Provide technical and commercial support during the tender process for the selection of preferred suppliers and the execution and implementation of maintenance contracts and framework agreements 
  • Undertake regular planning reviews jointly with the Finance Department and the Datacentre Managers to set and prioritise capital expenditure and operational expenditure budget levels for CFM, including representation to senior management for significant funding requests.
  • Manage the operational lifecycle of all facilities in conjunction with the Finance Department, including reviewing Useful Economic Life standards and plant replacement strategies and costs. 
  • Chair regular supplier review meetings in collaboration with the Procurement Manager to ensure all service partners, specialist sub-contractors and vendors adhere to strict service guidelines, and maintain the Service Level Agreement metrics required to support our facilities and Gyron’s customers. 
  • Integrate closely with the Datacentre Architects to ensure Gyron’s new facilities are designed with a focus on ease of operation and maintainability
  • Develop robust processes to manage Health and Safety within complex technical environments, including managing documentation, policies and procedures in respect to Permits to Work, Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) and Electrical Safe Systems of Work. 
  • Act as one of Gyron’s High Voltage Authorised Persons, and working closely with the HV SAP, assist in the operation of all HV infrastructure and related switching activities.
  • Ensure compliance with Gyron’s ISO Management Systems for all CFM activities, including Quality Management (ISO 9001), environmental sustainability (ISO 14001) and Information Security (ISO 27001). Ensure continuous improvement against the standards and perform regular internal audits.
  • Act as a point of escalation for Critical Facilities Maintenance issues.
  • Implement, manage and maintain a comprehensive toolset for the Facilities function, including O&Ms, CAFM, BIM and BMS systems. Use these tools to identify trends in equipment failures and operational issues. 


Required Experience:

  • You will have multiple years of extensive management experience in the operation of complex datacentre facilities across multiple disciplines, and will be regarded as an expert in this field. 
  • You will have an understanding of the type of large scale electrical and mechanical systems installed at Gyron’s mission critical facilities, including complex electrical distribution systems, UPS, chiller systems, standby generation, fire detection/suppression, and BMS/EMS and controls systems, and a demonstrated understanding of various redundancy topologies of such infrastructure.
  • You will have demonstrated an ability to work to short, medium and long-term deadlines, as well as being able to react quickly and change priorities to meet business and customer demands.
  • Ability to effectively work within a large/matrix organisation and utilise excellent communication and influencing skills to engage with personnel at all levels and drive consistency and standardisation across all CFM activities
  • A good knowledge of regulatory compliance, health and safety, and data security within a data centre environment, Including SFG20 and ISO41001

  • Ideally educated to degree or equivalent standard, with membership of a recognised relevant professional body, and certification or qualifications from a relevant industry body. 
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity, bringing clarity and control in a dynamic environment 
  • Have valid AP15 or equivalent qualification, and have experience in HV switching
  • Possess a full UK driving licence 
  • Undergo full security checks to BS7858:2012
