Datacentre Architect

Gyron is a rapidly growing part of NTT, the world’s largest telecommunications service provider, and provides highly resilient and energy efficient Data Centres services, supporting business critical IT applications for customers from five state-of-the-art datacentre facilities in the South East of England.  

About the Role:

As part of our continued growth, Gyron, one of the UK's leading colocation providers, is expanding our technical team. We are looking for an energetic and proven Senior MEP Engineer and datacentre subject matter expert. Working within the Technical Team this role involves driving MEP technical excellence during the full life cycle of the data centre. From the site selection and bid phase, through design and construction and into commissioning and operation. 

Other duties include leading the technical aspect of presales activities and providing technical input to our existing customers. This position, reporting directly into the Technical Director, has the scope to define Gyron’s datacentre offering by pushing innovation and influencing technical standards and specifications.

The successful candidate will be a proven, multi-disciplined MEP engineer with extensive knowledge of the datacentre sector. The role is varied and incorporates active involvement in providing complete datacentre solutions. You will work closely with Gyron’s team of Project Managers, Design Engineers, Contractors and Commercial teams to ensure the successful delivery and ongoing operation of the Data Centre. 

Specifically, you will:
  •       Take the lead in reviewing new customer service agreements with Gyron Account Managers and Project Managers to ensure elements are achievable and designs are executed to satisfy the contracted scope and requirements.  
  •       Prepare concept scheme designs and communicate these with contractors to develop build proposals.
  •       Lead development of technical specifications that capture key design requirements and protect Gyron's interests. 
  •       Provide pre-sales support for incoming enquiries to Gyron Account managers. 
  •       Undertake product comparison / selection reviews and recommend new approaches / suppliers. 
  •       Provide guidance and mentoring for other team members.
  •       Produce technical designs and prepare / attend Technical Presentations and Design Workshops with Clients within support to the Account Management team. 
  •       Analyse supplier technical submittals, drawings and reports such as CFD, PUE and peak load calculations.
  •       Enforce engineering excellence in design of new and legacy site expansions.
  •       Complete audits and input into quality assurance on new and existing facilities to ensure installations are in line with both the design intent and best practices
  •       Support site operations technically where required.
  •       Provide technical support and witnessing to commissioning activities to ensure that installed infrastructure meets Gyron’s specifications. 
  •       Actively undertake training to develop your capability and keep up to date with cutting edge technologies and processes

Required Experience: 

  • Extensive MEP design, commissioning and/or project management experience in Data Centre or other mission critical sector is essential
  • A proven track record of datacentre optimization and efficiency improvements
  • You will have detailed technical knowledge of the type of large scale electrical and mechanical systems installed at Gyron’s facilities, including complex electrical distribution systems, UPS, chiller systems, standby generation, fire detection/suppression, and BMS/EMS and controls systems, and a demonstrated understanding of various redundancy topologies of such infrastructure. 
  • You will have been in a senior position on multi-million-pound datacentre contracts and have had direct experience with working for blue chip multinational enterprises either directly or in a customer/supplier relationship.
  • You will have demonstrated an ability to work to short, medium and long-term deadlines, as well as being able to react quickly and change priorities to meet demands.
  • A good knowledge of regulatory compliance and health and safety within the datacentre environment.

  • An expert in datacentre engineering with a strong multi-disciplined engineering capability
  • You must have excellent communication skills, both verbally and written with the ability to produce technical reports, proposals and designs to a professional quality
  • Strong ability for technical analysis and problem solving, with great attention to detail.
  • Excellent organisation with strong time management skills
  • Ability to maintain own continual professional development
  • An Engineering Based Hons Degree (BEng/MEng/BSc) or equivalent experience/qualification is essential.
  • CENG Status or working towards it
  • Ambition to work in or previous experience of working in a fast paced, dynamic and growing technical environment
  • Possess a full driving licence valid for use in the UK
  • Undergo full security checks to BS7858:2012
