Associate Director Engineering

Gyron is a rapidly growing part of NTT, the world’s largest telecommunications service provider, operating highly resilient and energy efficient Data Centres and efficient data centre services, supporting business critical IT applications for some of the world’s biggest and most innovative Cloud Hosting and SaaS Service providers.  Gyron currently owns and operates five state-of-the-art datacentre facilities in the South East of England, with plans to expand its data centre portfolio in the short term future. 

About the Role:

Reporting to the Operations Director, you will have operational technical responsibility for Gyron’s datacentre infrastructure, ensuring the integrity, successful operation and enhancement of existing facilities. You will directly lead and manage a team of subject matter experts covering Electrical & Mechanical Engineering, Fire & Life Safety, BMS & Controls, and Technical Services.  You will have technical responsibility for the operation of 50MW of data centre infrastructure across 5 sites, and growing, which are managed on a day to day basis by site based technical teams.

 

Specifically, you will:

  •        Responsibility for management, creation and ensuring successful delivery of supplier maintenance contracts
  •        Ensuring site management teams apply correct maintenance programmes to all critical and non-critical assets
  •        Lifecyle replacement of major equipment
  •     Develop a framework for ensuring that Gyron’s datacentres are compliant with all statutory regulation and best practice methodologies.
  •        You will be a responsible person within Gyron’s safety rules, for Electrical, Mechanical and Fire & Life Safety
  •        Representative on the Health and Safety committee
  •     Provide mentoring, leadership and strategic direction to all the staff within your team, fostering a culture of passion and commitment for reliability and customer service. Enable your team members to achieve their objectives and facilitate collaboration with other departments across the business.
  •        Attract, develop, motivate and retain talent in your team and across the business by playing a key role in recruitment, facilitating internal and external training, staff engagement activities, performance management and coaching.
  •       Take the lead in communications and relationships regarding your team. Work with multiple senior level stakeholders within Gyron, with customers and key suppliers to ensure the highest levels of customer satisfaction, including by attending periodic business review meetings.
  •       Manage all change in the business from a FM perspective: planned, unplanned and as part of wider projects. Work with all relevant staff and departments to accurately forecast resources required and understand and communicate any potential impact to service or project delivery timescales.
  •       Define best practice in Facilities Maintenance. Ensure correct processes are in place and all technical documentation is complete and up to date, including asset information, Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), Emergency Operating Procedures (EOPs), and Safety Rules, with a focus on accuracy, clarity and continual improvement. Ensure all facilities and activities meet the necessary statutory requirements. Actively mitigate the risk of human error in all activities.
  •       Play a key role in managing Health and Safety within complex technical environments, including implementing the processes, policies and procedures in respect to Permits to Work (including Live Working), Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS), and Safe Systems of Work.
  •       Ensure compliance with Gyron’s ISO Management Systems for all FM activities, including Quality Management (ISO 9001), environmental sustainability (ISO 14001) and Information Security (ISO 27001). Ensure continuous improvement against the standards, perform regular internal audits, and represent your department at any relevant external audits.
  •       Provide monthly and ad-hoc internal and external reporting in-line with strict SLAs, as well as service performance metrics of Gyron’s key service delivery targets 
  •       Identify working inefficiencies and constantly drive productivity and quality metrics, whilst delivering value for money in all procurement activities.
  •       Manage a substantial budget and have financial control of all expenditure for FM through Gyron’s ERP system, working closely with each Datacentre Manager. Undertake regular business planning reviews jointly with the Finance Department and other functions to set capital expenditure and operational expenditure budget levels. Manage the full lifecycle of all facilities in conjunction with the Finance Department, including reviewing Useful Economic Life standards and plant replacement strategies and costs.
  •       Ensure all service partners and specialist sub-contractors and vendors adhere to strict service guidelines and maintain the Service Level Agreement metrics required to support your facilities and Gyron’s customers. Work with Gyron’s central procurement team as required to ensure we get the very best service from all our vendors.
  •       Act as a point of escalation for Facilities Maintenance and Technical issues, taking a leadership role, directing and managing technical resource during complex incidents, and determining and managing through to resolution the root cause of technical issues. Including 3rd level escalation OOH on-call rota
  •       Implement, manage and maintain a comprehensive toolset for the Facilities function, including CAFM and BMS systems. Use these tools to identify trends in equipment failures and operational issues.

Required Experience:

  • You will have multiple years of extensive management experience in the technical operation of complex Datacentre facilities across multiple disciplines and will be regarded as a technical expert in this field.
  • You will have detailed technical knowledge of the type of large scale electrical and mechanical systems installed at Gyron’s mission critical facilities, including complex electrical distribution systems, UPS, chiller systems, standby generation, fire detection/suppression, and BMS/EMS and controls systems, and a demonstrated understanding of various redundancy topologies of such infrastructure. 
  • You will have had direct experience with working for blue chip multinational enterprises either directly or in a customer/supplier relationship.
  • You will have demonstrated an ability to work to short, medium and long-term deadlines, as well as being able to react quickly and change priorities to meet business and customer demands.
  • Ability to effectively work within a large/matrix organisation and utilise excellent communication and influencing skills to engage with personnel at all levels and drive consistency and standardisation across all FM activities across the business
  • A good knowledge of regulatory compliance, health and safety, and data security within a datacentre and environment.

  • You must have outstanding communication skills, both written and verbal, with an ability to articulate complex problems in a clear and methodical way, and have experience dealing with difficult and multi-faceted problems.
  • Ideally educated to degree or equivalent standard, with Chartered Engineer or equivalent status, with membership of a recognised relevant professional body, and certification or qualifications from a relevant industry body (for example from The Uptime Institute).
  • Pro-active, responsive - able to prioritise and deal with intense moments of high activity using excellent analytical/problem solving skills.
  • Comfortable working through ambiguity, bringing clarity and control in a dynamic environment
  • Possess a driving license valid for use in the UK
